Cox: Jettison the monarchy and establish a parliamentary republic in Canada

Posted on May 21, 2020 by Republican Canadian

Queen Elizabeth II should be the last Queen of Canada. Canadians cannot avoid discussion about what comes next. The idea that another member of the British royal family should become the Canadian head of state is preposterous, offends our dignity and denies diversity. Canada should abolish the monarchy and become a parliamentary republic.

Elizabeth 2 is a fine lady and I wish her no ill.But the fact is she is a foreign, and non-resident,national whose primary loyalty is to the country of her birth and permanent residence. And that country is NOT Canada.Let her finish her reign in peace and let’s have a CANADIAN as our head of state after her.
Note:I am perfectly aware that one of her titles is the Queen of Canada but that doesn’t make her Canadian-except in a legal sense.

I do agree as the time has come but first to change the coat of arms, oath for citizenship, no crown on all our symbols of poer like the police and no more Royal before our military [Harper changed it back] and RCMP.

My plan (which I think is similar to Mr. Cox’s) is remove the Monarch and retain the GG (to be renamed President of Canada). Many countries have a PM/President combo. However, the selection/election of a President must include significant experience and study of leadership at the highest level (former CDS, Supreme Court Justice, President of University, etc…someone who is familiar with the constitution). This person would also be double-hatted as firm leader/President of the Senate. Nothing else needs to change.
Lastly, the Canadian Armed Forces oath would be changed to: “I SWEAR THAT I WILL BEAR TRUE ALLEGIANCE TO CANADA AND ITS ARMED FORCES. I WILL DEFEND MY COUNTRY AND I WILL DO MY LAWFUL DUTY TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY, SO HELP ME GOD.”

A Canadian Head of State

When Canada takes control of its office of head of state, by filling the position independently and internally, we will achieve another milestone in our evolution as a nation.

Values

Only when our head of state is selected democratically will our highest office embody the values of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Independence

After 150 years of nationhood it is truly unfortunate that Canada still lacks the self-assurance to fill and administer its own office of head of state. Canada is the only member of the G7 which does not independently administer its highest office.
