Republic Now denounces installation of statue of Queen Elizabeth at Queen’s Park

Posted on September 25, 2023 by Republican Canadian

Doug Ford spends $ 1,500,000 on statue of Queen Elizabeth, while most Ontarians want to turn the page on monarchy

Republic Now, a non-partisan organization advocating for a democratically-selected, Canadian, head of state, vigorously denounces Doug Ford’s decision to spend 1.5 million hard-earned tax payer dollars to install a statue of Queen Elizabeth at Queen’s Park.

A recent poll by Abacus Data revealed that, if a referendum were held today, 61% of Ontarians would vote to end our connection with the British monarchy. Thus, most of the money Ford is allocating to this initiative comes from people who likely don’t support it.

The statue installation, and Doug Ford’s insistence that Ontario’s MPPs sing “God Save the King” to open the legislature on the first Monday of every month, run counter to the views held by the majority of those living in Ontario.

While Barbados recently jettisoned the British monarchy in favour of a Barbadian head of state, and Australia now has an Assistant Minister for the Republic to oversee a similar transition, Ford seems determined to keep Ontario saddled with the monuments, protocols and values of the pre-democratic era.

Republic Now’s Executive Director, Ashok Charles, charges, “Doug Ford is using public money to indulge his attachment to an outdated institution which the majority of Ontarians- and Canadians in general- are ready to leave in the past.”

Republic Now is a not-for-profit, non-partisan organization which advocates for the replacement of the British monarch, as Canada’s head of state, with a democratically-selected Canadian.

To spent hard earned Canadian tax payers go to making a $1,500.00 statue of the queen is ridiculous and a waste of tax payers money since the manjority of Canadians want to get rid of the out dated costly immoral greedy UNDEMOCRATIC monarchy NOW! It costs Canadians almiost

For Canadian tax payers to pay $1,500.00 for a statue of the queen is ridiculous and a waste of Canadian taxpayer money! The monarchy is out dated useless costly innoral and UNDEMOCRATIC! The majority of Canadfians want tom get rid of the monarchy. It costrs Canadian taxpayers almost $60 MILLION a year to support the Governor general and ten lieutenants one for eah province who represents the king., not Canada. It costs us MILLIONS when the y come to visit Canada. The Governor General has the power to fire our PM and the entire cabinet. Thge GG inAustrsalia years ago did that! Go on line for details. NO SELF RESPECTING NATION LIKES TO BE CONTROLED BY ANOTHER! It is high time to get rid of the monarchy. I urge all good Canadians to send a letter otr email to PM trudeau with a copy to the GG demanding a referendum NOW! Also send a copy to your MP as well! I also urge all good Canadians to go online today and join the ever growing REPUBLIC NOW/REPUBLIQUEDU CANADA movement now and get involved! Enough is enough! VIVE LE CANADA LIBRE!

60 MILLION a year to support the GG and ten lieutenants one for 3ach province!

1.5 million dollars for the statue. Not $1,500.00.

We in BC have a republican movement, too. It is ‘futurereublicofCanada.com’
A Constitutional lawyer told me that because only sworn monarchists are permitted to in the military, RCMP, Lieutenant Governors, G’sG , MLAs, MPs and Supreme Court judges; an employment discrimination class action suit might tip the scales.

We have long known that Canada's plagiarism of the British monarchy is a cancer upon our nation, making our citizens subjects to a foreign throne; insulting oath-takers who are forced to to swear allegiance to a British household; denying Canadians the credit they deserve for historic achievements; preventing the development of wholly Canadian symbols; relegating those we have to positions inferior to British ones, including the Canadian flag, itself; precluding anyone other than a member of the Church of England from becoming "the personification of the Canadian state". We seek to rid our nation of this cancer, just as we hope Kate and Charles rid themselves of the diseases they are now battling. Only then can we step into the future, liberated from the insidious residue of imperialism. ... See MoreSee Less

"The king and queen of Canada" won't be seen in this country for a while. There were reports that plans for a visit in May were underway, but all bets are off, following Charles's cancer diagnosis. They won't touch our soil at all, this year. We're a tad disappointed, because a royal visit would have widened debate on whether our proud, independent and democratic nation should keep leaning on another country's unelected head of state for its highest office. A Canadian Head of State

When Canada takes control of its office of head of state, by filling the position independently and internally, we will achieve another milestone in our evolution as a nation.

Values

Only when our head of state is selected democratically will our highest office embody the values of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Independence

After 150 years of nationhood it is truly unfortunate that Canada still lacks the self-assurance to fill and administer its own office of head of state. Canada is the only member of the G7 which does not independently administer its highest office.
