Board of Directors

  • Executive
    • Executive Director: Ashok Charles
      • Ashok Charles is a founding member and the current Executive Director of Republic Now. He is a writer-photographer, based in Toronto, whose work has appeared in many national publications. Since 2004, he has been enthusiastically involved with the initiatives of the Canadian republican movement. In May, 2004, at Queen’s Park, Toronto, he publicly recanted the oath of allegiance to the Queen, and the British royal family, that he had been required to take to become a Canadian citizen. His recantation, submitted as a notarized document, was recognized and accepted by the Department of Citizenship and Immigration. In 2012, he was an affiant in the legal challenge launched by Charles Roach, another founding member of Republic Now, which argued that the regulation requiring new Canadians to swear allegiance and faithfulness to the British royal family is a violation of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Currently no, as you see from the above list of names. We are certainly open to that, and would welcome interested folks to participate–female and male.

I take it you people have never read the Canadian Constitution, the part about how one can change form of Gov.. Canadians can not agree on the time of day, so good luck on getting one hundred percent of all legislatures agree on a change, you are living in a dream world.

Ashok Charles: So you recanted your oath of allegiance. That would indicate to me that your word is worth nothing. Anyone who breaks an oath can not be trusted.

Actually, I disagree. It takes courage to stand against the status quo and british monarchists.

I never really had any strong feelings about the royals until the past few years. After learning about the Queen’s hypocrisy on climate change (lobbying Scottish ministers to change a draft law to exempt her private land from green energy rule), seeing the Cambridges’ disastrous tours in the Caribbean as well as Will and Kate not sharing their diversity in staff numbers, and Charles talking about the rising cost of living while sitting on a gold throne next to his mother’s stolen diamond crown (which was driven to the opening of Parliament in its own car!), and mostly, how they’ve treated and driven out their first non-White royal family member. I absolutely am for abolishing the monarchy. They are useless. There is no room for a hierarchy like the monarchy in a true equitable society that is just for all.

It would be democratic if you published the number or current members in your organization on a regular basis. Also, it would be useful to see if this membership is increasing or delcling.

Can you tell me what you are doing to actively recruit women to your board? This is necessary if you are to be considered a representative and serious organization. BTW, I want the monarchy gone yesterday.

So what’s the difference between your groups and Citizens for a Canadian Republic. Weren’t most of your board members formerly with that organization? Why did you create a new group?

Republic Now / République du Canada
We have long known that Canada's plagiarism of the British monarchy is a cancer upon our nation, making our citizens subjects to a foreign throne; insulting oath-takers who are forced to to swear allegiance to a British household; denying Canadians the credit they deserve for historic achievements; preventing the development of wholly Canadian symbols; relegating those we have to positions inferior to British ones, including the Canadian flag, itself; precluding anyone other than a member of the Church of England from becoming "the personification of the Canadian state". We seek to rid our nation of this cancer, just as we hope Kate and Charles rid themselves of the diseases they are now battling. Only then can we step into the future, liberated from the insidious residue of imperialism. ... See MoreSee Less

Republic Now / République du Canada
"The king and queen of Canada" won't be seen in this country for a while. There were reports that plans for a visit in May were underway, but all bets are off, following Charles's cancer diagnosis. They won't touch our soil at all, this year. We're a tad disappointed, because a royal visit would have widened debate on whether our proud, independent and democratic nation should keep leaning on another country's unelected head of state for its highest office. A Canadian Head of State

When Canada takes control of its office of head of state, by filling the position independently and internally, we will achieve another milestone in our evolution as a nation.

Values

Only when our head of state is selected democratically will our highest office embody the values of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Independence

After 150 years of nationhood it is truly unfortunate that Canada still lacks the self-assurance to fill and administer its own office of head of state. Canada is the only member of the G7 which does not independently administer its highest office.
